A physical wellness app for adults 55+ living with chronic joint pain

People with disabilities form one of the largest groups in the world. According to a report published by the United Nations in 2011, there were more than 1.3 billion people with physical disabilities in the world: similar to the population of China, and more than three times the size of the population of the United States.

One of the ubiquitous pain points for these particular individuals is a lack of “equitable facilitation for physical wellness”. This means that many with mobility issues lack readily available resources to help them with physical exercise.

We found this to be a design challenge with potentially simple solutions that may make a real impact. Using this as a launchpad, we started with reframing the problem statement, and researching insights required to arrive at a design solution.

  • Who is she?

Lorna is 56 years old, she lives in Houston, Texas. She has worked at the University of Texas , MD Anderson Center. She lives on the outskirts of the city. She has one boy, 23 and a girl 25 years old. She has been married 26 years.

    Goals:

Lorna is mainly concerned with the well-being of the members of her family. As an immigrant, fitting into the image of an American family has been her motivation for most of her life. She wants to ensure that her children receive the maximum benefits American life offers.

    Behaviors:

Lorna considers her self a conservative-democrat. She likes technology for how easy it makes her life. Her family uses Apple products exclusively, that decision is at Lorna's behest. In recent years, Lorna has begun to change her eating habits and she now buys food from Trader Joes and Whole Foods exclusively. She has also discovered anti-aging homeopathy, yoga and beauty tools. Lorna is very concerned about living long enough to see her grandchildren.

Lorna is a slow decision maker. She prefers to take her time before making appliance, tool, choosing service providers or any other types of decisions. When she does make her final decisions, convenience is almost always the final factor; convenience meaning, the cart followed her Internet session. availability of product, item can be shared with another family member and/or the item was on sale.

  • Who is he?

Ben immigrated to the United States from Germany in his late thirties after accepting a teaching position at Johns Hopkins University. He has lived in Columbia, Maryland since coming to the US. He is now 65 years old and approaching retirement. In his retirement, he hopes to travel more with his husband, George, and their two Shepherd mixes, Sampson and Caesar. Ben and George are also planning on moving to Florida to escape the cold Maryland winters. They hope their move to Florida will inspire them to be more physically active, something they neglected while they were working stressful full time jobs.

Ben was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis of the hip three years ago, and unfortunately, his condition has worsened over time. Ben often feels like his arthritis is taking over his life.It is difficult for him to walk and get up from a sitting position. The thought of running seems almost impossible. He has tried physical therapy, and his therapist recommends that he do exercises at home.He isn't opposed to doing the work, but the material the PT gave him isn't the most engaging.

    Goals

Walk long distances with limited pain

Comfortably take Sampson and Caesar on walks

    Behaviors

Not opposed to technology, and tries to keep up with tech trends. He has a loyalty to Apple products and always wants the latest and greatest. He typically relies on word of mouth recommendations from friends and the media. Not the best at being consistent with apps due to his busy schedule.
